DOST-PCAARRD IARRD conducts M&E and Inception Meeting of UPV’s New and Ongoing Mussel and Mangrove Crab Projects

The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquaculture and Natural Resources Research and Development Division (DOST-PCAARRD), Inland Aquaculture Resources Research Division (IARRD) had a monitoring and evaluation of the on-going research projects and inception meeting for the newly approved projects of UP Visayas last April 17, 2024.

Present during the activity were DOST-PCAARRD IARRD representatives headed by their director, Dr. Adelaida T. Calpe; SRS II, Ms. Kristine Joy L. Tandang; DOST SPD representative, Mr. Lemuel Asinas; and representatives from DOST Region VI.

Project leaders of the existing research projects presented their accomplishments and current activities in relation to their set objectives and workplan. The presenters were Dr. Reynold D. Tan for the Product Process Optimization at Scale-up Production and Marketing Plan For Low Salt-Fermented Mussel (Perna Viridis) Sauce; Dr. Harold M. Monteclaro for the Development of a framework for resource management, mitigation of impacts, and guidance towards rational utilization of Mytella strigata in the Philippines Project 1: The Fishery, Socioeconomic Aspect and Governance of Mytella strigata in the Philippine Waters; and Dr. Concepcion P. Ponce for the A Valorization of Agri-Fishery Materials Using Opportune Science (AVAMOS): Nanomaterials from mussel shells for agri-aquaculture applications.

Furthermore, the team also conducted an inception meeting of newly approved projects funded by DOST-PCAARRD. Project leaders together with their research staff were present as well as the UPV Accounting Office and SPSO to orient and remind them of their specific roles and responsibilities as to meet with the DOST guidelines for R&D project implementation.

These projects were:

•Accelerated R&D Program for Capacity Building of Research and Development Institutions and Industrial Competitiveness: Collaborative Research and Development to Leverage Philippine Economy (CRADLE): Synergizing Mussel Technologies for Better Quality Mussels in Sapian, Capiz with Ms. Rose T. Mueda as Project Leader;

•Pilot Scale Production of Bioactive Protein and Lipid Products from Mussels, Dr. Sharon N. Nunal as project leader;

•Molecular Detection of Pathogens in Mangrove Crab: A Step Towards Ensuring a Sustainable Mangrove Crab Aquaculture Industry with Dr. Christopher Marlowe A. Caipang as project leader.

These projects are under the Mussel and Mangrove Crab Industry Strategic Science and Technology Programs of DOST. UP Visayas unceasingly works with DOST in crafting and implementing research projects that are geared towards an innovative and sustainable future in the field of science and technology.
