The application of the UP Visayas Research Ethics Board (UPVREB) for Level 1 accreditation was approved by the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB) on 24 October 2022. The UPVREB ensures that students, faculty, and researchers comply with the ethical conduct of research involving human participants.
Prof. Cristabel Parcon, chairperson of the UPVREB said that “This accreditation will encourage more researchers to submit their proposals for ethical review thereby ensuring the conduct of their research according to ethical principles. This would mean that researchers would be more careful in dealing with their participants, ensuring their consent, safety, and security, minimizing risks, and being more transparent in their research conduct.”
The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquaculture and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) conducted a site-visit, monitoring and evaluation of on-going milkfish, shrimp, tilapia mussel, aquafeeds and inland biodiversity projects in the University of the Philippines Visayas last November 17-19, 2022.
The project leaders, their respective project staff and research assistants presented the status of their projects which includes their accomplishments and deliverables. The presenters were Prof. Fredson H. Huervana, Dr. Carmelo S. Del Castillo, Dr. Rex Ferdinand M. Trafalgar, Dr. Jade G. Pahila, Dr. Mary Jane A. Amar, and Dr. Augusto E. Serrano Jr.
Dr. Christopher Marlowe A. Caipang of the Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, was recognized as Outstanding Researcher in Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources category at the first-ever Idlab Awards by the Regional Research, Development and Innovation Committee (RRDIC) of the Regional Development Council (RDC) Region VI last November 19, 2022 as part of the National Science and Technology Week 2022 celebration in Western Visayas.
19 In-house research and 23 externally-funded projects registered with the OVCRE went through a 3-day monitoring and evaluation last November 9 to 11, 2022.
The event aimed to track the progress and challenges of different projects under the arm of the university.
On the first day, the research presenters were divided into break out sessions: Socio-Econ group with Dr. Marshaley Baquiano of the University of Guam and Dr. Carolyn Jimenez of UP Los Baños served as evaluators; Natural Sciences group with Dr. Ian Kendrich Fontanilla of UP Diliman and Prof. Lilibeth Bucol of Negros Oriental State University; Chemistry group with Dr. Maria Pythias Espino from UP Diliman and Dr. Stephen Sabinay of West Visayas State University. For the Aquaculture group, Dr. Victor Marco Emmanuel N. Ferriols of CFOS-IA,UP Visayas and Dr. Hazel O. Arceo of UP Cebu.
Taking a step towards commercialization, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension (OVCRE) together with the Technology Transfer Business Development Office (TTBDO) conducted a pitching session last October 24, 2022 at Summit Hotel, Tacloban, Leyte. Various stakeholders including mussel farmers, processors, industry partners, students and researchers were present in the said event.
The featured mussel-related innovative technologies were the mussel glycogen extract by Dr. Leni Yap-Dejeto from the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, UPV Tacloban College and mussel powder capsule and mussel lipid soft gel by Dr. Sharon N. Nuñal from the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, UPV Miagao Campus. Mussel glycogen can be utilized in soaps and cosmetic products while the mussel powder capsule and mussel lipid softgel have nutraceutical applications.
