The University of the Philippines Visayas Research Ethics Board (UPV REB) has been granted Level 2 Accreditation by the Philippine Research Ethics Board (PHREB) Online Accreditation System today, March 12, 2025. UPV REB is responsible for ensuring that students, faculty and researchers of the university adhere and comply with the ethical conduct of research involving human participants. 

Asst. Prof. Lhumen A. Tejano, UPV REB chairperson said that this accreditation serves as a testament to the dedication of the UPV REB in safeguarding the well-being and welfare of human participants in research. “This will provide more confidence to UPV REB in conducting the ethical review of research involving human participants” Asst. Prof Tejano added. 

Level 2 Accreditation means that the UPV REB, a functional research ethics board, has demonstrated satisfactory performance as an accredited REC. This means that UPV REB can review all types of research except clinical trials required for FDA registration of new drugs. 

With this accreditation, it is expected that more researchers in the university will seek UPV REB to review their proposals and protocols before conducting activities that will involve human subjects. This, in turn, will improve the conduct of research in UPV and even outside the university as more study proposals are submitted for UPV REB consideration and review. 

“The main advantage of having this accreditation is the fact that we now see the value of ensuring the dignity and welfare of our human participants and that our participants are assured that they are being well taken care of as they take part in the generation of knowledge and technology by our researchers.” said Asst. Prof. Tejano.
